How bad is MAACO?

The nearest MAACO is a two and a half hour drive from me, and I really want a blue car. Namely, the Miata, whose paint is so terrible already that it can’t really get much worse. What can I expect as far as a total color change from the cheapest of MAACO paint jobs?

Kinja'd!!!

Either this or British Racing Green.

WHYYYYYYYY

Why spend money on paint for a salvage title miata with a 160,000 miles that you wrecked again?

Just, fucking why? If you really want it to be blue, go get some plastidip. Or just don’t.

What’s that first rule of Oppo again? Oh right.

Thatbeing said they are doing some awesome stuff with pearl plastidip nowadays.

A reasonable color change would be like 5 grand. You could easily find a miata in the color you wanted for that much.

honestly, I might check out a custom vinyl wrap. They have some pretty wicked colors now.

Honestly, rolling on some thinned-out bright blue rustoleum and then doing a bunch of wet sanding and polishing would give a vastly better result.

MACCO quoted me $1100 if I recall for a singlestage paintjob. I didn’t go with them.

I’m always shocked by how not-cheap Maaco is. If the body is in good shape, you’re looking at 1000 or so to repaint it the color it is. If your car isn’t already blue, you could save yourself some money by painting the door jambs and inside the truck etc by yourself out of a rattle can.

Basically, I wouldn't go full color change from Maaco. I'd sell it and buy one in the color I want.

If he plans to keep it for a very long time, or maybe just feels a certain attachment to the car, what does it matter? Also, it might help with the longevity of the body panels staying rust-free! I can see your point, but maybe he just REALLY likes that specific Miata. Just saying.

Bad dude, really bad. Just flat black or wrap the wrecked one or buy one in the color you want. NAs are still cheap.

A local paint shop will do better for cheaper.

I’m with G body Man 9n this one. You’d be better off doing it yourself once the weather warms up. Rattle can, roller, even a princess auto/ Horrible Freight paint gun and a rented air compressor.

This is pretty much the right answer; This guy used rustoleum to paint a corvair, and got decent results that have held up pretty well, plus, it cost $50!

colour change from maaco? you wouldn’t be happy, see if a stripe shop nearby could vinyl wrap it for you. That lego blue colour would look ok in wrap. Here’s the thing with maaco, speaking in generalities, they’ve usually got a really good painter, who can knock em out all day long, good enough that there’s nothing to touch up. They will not be using good paint. They will prep and tape pretty willy-nilly. I got my first project sprayed at maaco, totally sanded, glass out rubbers out etc. My body work was a little crude but it looked fantastic. That car was still shiny and red 10 years later on the crusher pile, in single stage red. If its a beater go for it, a mako-bake-o is good enough.

Most wraps I’ve heard of are around $2000+ or more, which is obscene (there was actually a guy rolling around in a metallic graphite Miata he paid $3k to have wrapped). If I took it to Maaco I’d be service-stripping it in the parking lot before handing it over. Popping off trim pieces, etc. which it is VERY obvious was not done on my Mustang, judging by the peeling paint where it meets up with the door trim.

Doubt it. Most paint shops want $2k, and I’ve heard maaco (especially on such a small car) will do it for around $700

Nah, my miata is a shitpile. I’m going to rattlecan my white door sorta-silver to match the rest of it and then probably sell it, try flipping my Mustang, and buy a *nice* Miata, or a slightly beat up miata and a lot of parts. Thing is, I doubt I’ll get a color I really want so I want to know what my options are for a color change.

You should just plasti dip it. Generally speaking re sprays aren't worth the money unless you are paying upwards of four grand. If you don't like dip then you can always rip it off.

Yes, but you may end up having that done more than once due to orange peel, cracking or worst, mismatched panels.

Do your own prep work and have them spray only.

I was thinking about doing MAACO... After doing some research I realized that I’d have to spend $500 on a paint job that lasts roughly two years before looking like garbage.

I spent $250 on supplies and now I can spray my Miata a new color of plasti-dip every year for $100 worth of dip. And my current dip job is over 2 years old and looking about as rough as the MAACO job probably would...

dipyourcar.com and the forums there were great resources for me. I’ve dipped my car black, green, and blue. As you can tell, I am so happy with dipping my car that I’m practically a salesman. It gets addicting. I’m thinking of going metallic yellow in the spring.

IF you’re on a budget, don’t paint your car. Dip it or wrap it.

MAACO isn’t cheap anymore. They wanted to charge me $300 for a fender repaint. For the same cash i could get a legit paint job that will acutally look good. If you want something cheap that’s a 5 footer, you have to go local.

Wrap it yourself! You can make a project out of it and get the 3M online for maybe a couple of hundred bucks.
